Whether you're looking for your first pro-studio mic, or are searching for the best model to fill out a microphone locker, the NT2-A bears strong consideration as it excels in almost any application. A winner? Oh, yes.
The NT2-A is an all-round winner that's versatile enough to take on the innumerable miking tasks that the world presents
It offers remarkable performance and capacitor-microphone sonic virtues at a very affordable price, and as such it redefines the term 'value for money'.
The microphone itself is a classic large diaphragm side address design whose brushed silver finish looks seriously sleek. As with other RØDE microphones the NT2-A feels solidly built to the point where you could probably hammer nails in with it... although we wouldn't recommend it!
Unlike many other condenser mics the NT2-A's switches are easy to read thanks to them being proudly mounted to a black rectangular panel - a welcome factor when you are already busy enough playing/singing and engineering at the same time!
The package itself is pretty comprehensive, the mic comes complete with a good quality XLR to XLR microphone lead, a microphone dust cover-cum-pouch and a handy SM6 shock mount, which apart from being a very effective suspension mount also includes an integral and fully adjustable pop shield... When set up, the thing does look seriously professional and will certainly impress potential studio clients.
The RØDE NT2-A seems to give an almost vintage tone - not a valve sound or distorted sound - just that classic enhanced but smooth presence region... When I think of the classic microphones the one thing I associate is their ability to make more than a decent stab at absolutely anything you throw at them. The RØDE NT2-A has this in spades and put in a really classy performance with absolutely anything I pointed at it. Guitars, differently styled vocalists, percussion and even handclaps all come through sounding like the original source but with the added slightly euphoric but always well placed sonic fingerprint of the NT2-A. At this price the RØDE NT2-A is quite simply a bargain!
Unlike many mics in its class, this unit is obviously NOT made in China! Its construction is superior, the mic is dead quiet, and the sound reproduction is super accurate. I don't think any company can beat RØDE for quality and performance versus price
I just purchased an NT2-A and I wanted to comment that I can hardly believe the microphone that I got for the money. Up until now I was recording with rented tlm103's and decided to get a LDC of my own. After a couple of session I am convinced that got a mic of equal calibre for a fraction of the cost PLUS the versatility of multiple pickup patterns. Thanks for making world class recording condenser microphones accessible to the average musician
Having owned AKG-414s, Neuman U87 and TLM103s, I have to tell it like it IS. That is that this mic is not only quieter (less self noise) than ANY other mic I've ever used, but on MY male voice is as rich and detailed with NOTHING to complain about. Is flat out perhaps the finest single microphone on the market. It can do so many things so very well. From acoustic piano, acoustic guitar, male and female vocals, mandolin, flute and the list goes on.
There is simply NO way to be dissatisfied with this mic. Nearly any half way competent mic pre will make it shine. Put it on a sweet mic pre (Avalon, Focusrite etc.) and you can't help but be flat blown away. For its price there is NO excuse not to own at least ONE...
